NPOL: GPM Precipitation Science Research Facility

NASA/GPM Radar Assets

NPOL

NPOL constitutes a unique and valuable resource for both NASA Earth Sciences and external communities. The new antenna system provides better than 1 deg beam width and electrical performance consistent with the collection of research-quality polarimetric data. In addition to the antenna system upgrade, the radar signal processor has also been upgraded to the SIGMET/Vaisala RVP-900 from its original SIGMET RVP-7 technology. The new processor provides a more robust means to collect and process raw I/Q and moment data in both conventional alternating (full covariance matrix) and simultaneous transmit/receive modes. Importantly, the NPOL radar will function as one of only two deployable, research-grade S-band dual-polarimetric radars in the world. As the centerpiece of a robust Precipitation Science program, NASA should be leading the way in innovative and pioneering uses of such a platform because research grade radars provide the link between what satellites see and precipitation hitting the ground.
