In the spring of 2013 (May 1 - June 15), NASA, in collaboration with other government agencies and members of the U.S. academic research community, will conduct a field experiment in northeastern Iowa called the Iowa Flood Studies, or IFloodS. The main goal of the experiment is to support Ground Validation program activities of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite mission. GPM is an international effort designed to enhance and unify precipitation measurements from space through improved measurement accuracy and temporal and spatial sampling over the majority of the globe. These observations will serve the scientific goals of developing a better understanding of our weather and climate and the operational purposes of enhanced hazard forecasting and water resources management. Ground Validation is an integral element of the mission, designed to develop and master relevant algorithms for converting satellite instrument data to useful information about rainfall and snowfall and to provide credible assessment of the associated uncertainties needed for local decision-making (from U. NASA will be providing support for field operations of several disdrometers (Parsivel, Joss-Waldvogel, and Two-D Video), rain gauges (tipping bucket) and its newly refurbished polarimetric (NPOL).
