Comparisons of precipitation from GEOS output and Level-3 MRMSGEOSThe Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) output data are available from 12 Aug 2018 to 31 Dec 2019 for this study. There are many variables in GEOS output. The PRECTOT is the only variable of interest for this study. PRECTOT is a global precipitation product with resolutions of 0.3125 deg in longitude and 0.25 deg in latitude. The unit is kg m^-2 s^-1, which is equivalent to mm/s.Comparisons with MRMSThe comparisons are conducted over the CONUS (25N-50N, 125W-65W) using the above GEOS data and level-3 MRMS data during the commonly available period from 12 Aug 2018 to 31 Dec 2019.Note there are quite a few MRMS missings in this period. GEOS files for these days are also missing: 18 Aug 2018, 15 Dec 2018, 26 Apr 2019, 27 Apr 2019 Half-hourly MRMS precipitation data filtered with radar quality index (RQI) thresholds are accumulated to hourly resolution. Two methods are applied in converting hourly MRMS precipitation from 0.01X0.01 deg to 0.3125X0.25 deg grids. (1) simply avearge all valid 0.01X0.01 deg data in a 0.3125X0.25 deg grid. (2) nearest neighbor
Precipitation rates less than 0.1 mm/h from both GEOS and MRMS are not plotted as the GEOS gets a lot of suspicious light precipitation. Daily precipitation rates are estimated from hourly data where precipitation less than 0.1 mm/h is set to 0 for MRMS and GEOS, repectively. |
