Rain Gauge: GPM Precipitation Science Research Facility

Wallops PRF High-Density Gauge Network

A network of 25 indvidual gauge platforms (two gauge per platform) that were deployed in a 5 km x 5 km area near Nassawadox, VA area from April 2012 to July 2013. Now that the NPOL radar has been deployed in the Newark, MD area, the network will be moved the Pocomoke area.

The Wallops GPM PRF is currently supporting two gauge and disdrometer networks. A high density gauge grid is located in an around Pocomoke City, MD is aimed towards validating space-based estimates on the scale of the nominal GPM DPR footprint size of about 5 km. The second, larger grid, also includes the Pocomoke network, but it's scale is approximately 0.5 degrees (lat & lon). This network will serve to better validate both DPR and GMI observations and is well sampled by NASA's NPOL radar, which is located in Newark, MD. The 0.5 degree scale is roughly bounded by Chincoteague, VA to the southeast; Crisfield, MD to the southwest; Salisbury, MD to the north; and, Newark, MD to the northeast.

All times are in Universal Time Coordinate (UTC) and each report represents the 24 period between 0000-2359 UTC. See the line just above for the current UTC time.

But, generally, for the Eastern Shore, during fall and winter this means the period is between 8 PM the previous night and 8 PM for the current night. During the sprint and summer, the period is between 7 PM the previous night and 7 PM for the current night.

Parameter Description
Packets These gauges report every 15 minutes (4 times per hour), so the maximum number of packets received in each 24 hour period is 24*4=96.
Wetness This parameter indicates the humidity inside the "black box" which houses the electronics. Any number greater than 3.3 could indicate moisture in the box and the gauge should be visited.
Voltage The voltage parameter indicates the voltage of the battery housed inside the container. Red values indicate that the voltage is low and may trigger a maintenance visit.
Solar The solar parameter provides the current period statistics on solar power being processed by the solar panel.
RSSI The RSSI parameter represents the cellular modem signal strength.
Tips (A/B) There are two gauges on each platform. When facing the front the gauge (the side with the lock on it), gauge A is on the left and gauge B is on the right. Each tip represents 0.254 mm or 0.01" or rain.
Accum (A/B) [mm] This parameter is the cumulated parameter in the current 24-hour period, expressed in mm. Note that 1" = 25.4 mm.
Accum (A/B) [inches] This parameter is the cumulated parameter in the current 24-hour period, expressed in inches.
Bias [%] This parameter represents the bias in accumulated rainfall between the two gauges. It is expressed as a percentage. Biases of more than about 10% indicate a problem with one or more of the gauges.

Summary Plots

You can view the latest summary plots for the 25 gauges in 5x5 panels by clicking the links below. The tips plot uses the raw tip data to calculate the total accumulation for each day. The rain rate plot converts the raw tip data to 1-min average rain rates using a cubic spline technique by Wang and Wolff (2008).
