The GPM Precipitation Research Facility (PRF) will deploy a number of gauge networks
for studying the spatial temporal variation of precipitation, and to provide
validation to radar and disdrometer precipitation rate estimates.
One of the early goals of the PRF will be to deploy a network of rain gauges
over a 5 km x 5 km area with a horizontal resolution of 1-2 km, centered near
Nassawadox, Virginia. At present, 18 sites have been designated for
deployment and 16 have actually been deployed. NASA has purchased
25 dual-gauge platforms from the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research at
the University of Iowa.
Presently, five sites have been designated to deploy 2DVDs at the Wallops main base.
